Yooper Matness

Matness, Yooper Style.

Every March the Pilates community around the globe comes together to move, to breathe, and to honor the original Mat work created by the man himself. Ahem, Joseph Pilates.

It’s called March Matness and this year Bird On A Perch is planning to celebrate Yooper Style. Starting on March 1st monitor our Instagram posts to see real Yoopers doing Pilates the same way that Joe always liked to. In the snow.

It’s a little thing we’re calling #YooperMatness and here’s how you can participate …

Once again we’ve amped up our schedule to accommodate all of the movement that will be happening in March. Visit MindBody for a glimpse of the Matness and snag your Unlimited Access Pass* to take full advantage.

Our New Frequent Flyers Club

Instant street cred, and more.

If there is one thing we love more than practicing Pilates, it’s observing the progress of those students that go all in. Those that approach every lesson with curiosity. Those that spend their time outside of the studio walls thinking about what it means to “Return To Life“. If you ask us, these students deserve kudos. And, a little bit of special treatment.

Well … with the launch of our Frequent Flyers Club we look forward to rewarding real people who have proven to be 100% badass.

At the end of each month we’ll take a look at accumulated attendance for the year {so, 2018}. Those students that have dedicated at least 25-hours to their Pilates practice will receive one very official e-mail communication inducting them into our Frequent Flyers Club {#woohoo}. Along with instant street cred, members can look forward to free stuff, such as …

  • 25 Hours: One Free Studio Class
  • 50 Hours: One Free Equipment Class
  • 75 Hours: Complimentary Studio Class Five Pack
  • 100 Hours: One Complimentary Private Lesson
  • 150 Hours: One Month Unlimited Studio Classes {on us!}

Studio Sounds: 1971

First stop, 1971.

Inspired by the new year, and the fact that I finally added a turntable to the studio, the Pilates Playlist is getting a bit of a makeover this year. Rather than scouring Spotify in attempt to surface the best new tracks, in 2018 I’m going to give a nod to the past.

Every month I’ll pick one year. Possibly because it was a formidable year in my life. Or, possibly because it was just an amazing year for music. I’ll dig through Billboard charts, research album releases that year, and turn up the volume. The result? A playlist that, in my mind, properly represents those 365 days.

My first stop, 1971. The year that NPR hit the airwaves. The year of the first floppy disk. The year the Pentagon Papers were released. The year NASA sent the Mariner 9 to Mars. And … the year David Hepworth coined “Rock’s Golden Year”.

To explore 1971 musically is like laying down to look at the stars. Awe-striking. Powerful. And, extremely overwhelming. Think of an artist that you love from the 60’s and 70’s and chances are they released an album in 1971. There was soul. There were blues. And, it rocked. Twenty songs doesn’t quite do it justice, but at least this is a glimpse …

  • Dead Flowers, Rolling Stones
  • Behind Blue Eyes, The Who
  • Going To California, Led Zeppelin
  • The Wind, Cat Stevens {Yusuf}
  • Where You Lead, Carole King
  • Riders On The Storm, The Doors
  • Life On Mars, David Bowie
  • Mercy Mercy Me, Marvin Gaye
  • Get It While You Can, Janis Joplin
  • Fearless, Pink Floyd
  • Your Move, Yes
  • Solitude, Black Sabbath
  • No One To Depend On, Santana
  • Acute Schizophrenia Paranoia Blues, The Kinks
  • I’m Eighteen, Alice Cooper
  • Family Affair, Sly & The Family Stone,
  • Music is Love, David Crosby
  • Stay With Me, Faces
  • Better Days, Graham Nash
  • Life Is A Carnival, The Band

And this is only scratching the surface. If you want to take a trip back to 1971 head on over to Spotify where these tracks are waiting for you.

Studio Sounds – December 2017

The last of the 2017s.

Here we are. Another year coming to end. While it was a rough year in many ways, in the music world things shaped up pretty nicely. At least, if you’re asking me.

2017 brought new albums from some very well names in Indie – Radiohead, Arcade Fire, Beck, The National, The War On Drugs, on and on. Really it was endless. I also really appreciated the opportunity to get to know musicians such as Steve Lacy, The Flying Stars Of Brooklyn NY, and This Is The Kit. And then of course, Sean Hayes did this thing where he re-released “Smoking Signals”. Heart, stolen.

Looking at a micro-level 2017 had some redeeming moments. And, I have the tunes to prove it. The end of year playlist comes with not ten, but twenty suggested tracks. All from the past 365 days. Dive in, get groovy.

  • Live Well, Palace
  • Shark Smile, Big Thief
  • Road Head, Japanese Breakfast
  • Heart To Say Goodbye, Washed Out
  • Dark Red, Steve Lacy
  • Leave The Light On, Overcoats
  • Burn It Down, Daughter
  • Here If You Want, MOSSS
  • Smoking Signals, Sean Hayes
  • The Gold, Manchester Orchestra
  • Moonshine Freeze, This Is The Kit
  • My God Has A Telephone, The Flying Stars Of Brooklyn NY
  • Sheep, Mt. Joy
  • Gold Angel, Minke
  • Apocalypse, Cigarettes After Sex
  • Mourning Sound, Grizzly Bear
  • Dum Surfer, King Krule
  • Die Young, Sylvan Esso
  • Anemone, Slenderbodies
  • Didya Think, Arlie
  • Diamond Rings, Tennis

Head on over to Spotify to take a listen. And, enjoy these last few moments of 2017. Appreciate what was good.

Studio Sounds – Holiday Edition 2017

Hipster holiday tunes.

Last year I made a confession. For those of you who missed it, let me catch you up to speed …

I can’t stand holiday music.

Well, it’s that time of year again and those sounds that make me cringe are playing, everywhere. Rather than letting the high pitched voices and cheesy melodies turn me into a complete Scrooge, this year I’ve continued my quest for holiday music that I actually enjoy.

And, so the Hipster Holiday Party Playlist lives on. The 2017 edition includes twenty new tracks that are seasonally appropriate and yet indie enough to keep me interested. Kind of like this guys beard …

  • Just Like Christmas, Low
  • This Might Be My Year, Nyck
  • Winter Song, The Head & The Heart
  • Christmas Must Be Tonight, Bahamas
  • Party Hard, Zach Gill
  • Christmas TV, Slow Club
  • The First Song, Band of Horses
  • New Years, Ohbijou
  • Angels We Have Heard On High, Seabird
  • November Was White, December Was Grey, Say Hi
  • Winter Creatures, Grand Hallway
  • Winter Woman, Good Show Great Show
  • St. Nicholas, Leaf Pile

  • So Much Wine, Merry Christmas, Andrew Bird
  • White Winter Hymnal, Fleet Foxes

New Pilates Memberships

Move more, save more.

As we feel the bite of winter making its way to the UP, we’ve been reminded just how useful a regular movement practice can be. To serve as an outlet when it’s too blustery to go outside. To warm you up on those colder than cold days. To keep your mind sound, even in darkness. To us movement … well, it’s medicine.

In an effort to keep you all in motion through the winter {and beyond}, we’re switching up the way that we do things at Bird On A Perch. Along with our current drop-in classes and private lessons we’re excited to announce the availability of our *new memberships*. Now, with a regular monthly payment, students will be able to attend three, four, or even an unlimited number of Studio classes per week {#jackpot}. Not to mention you could even snag a discount on those Equipment classes that we all love so much. Ready to spread your wings? Scroll on …

Our FLAP membership is perfect for students looking to build a regular Pilates practice, without breaking the bank. Members are able to attend up to three Studio classes per week and also receive 10% off of all clothing from the Bird On A Perch retail store. FLAP your wings for just $75 per month.

Our FLY membership is perfect for students who like to supplement their Mat practice with regular Equipment classes. With this option you can attend up to four Studio classes per week, you’ll receive 15% off of your Equipment drop-in classes, and you’ll also snag 10% off of all clothing. FLY away for just $100 per month.

Our SOAR membership is the best way to experience all that the studio has to offer – on the Mat, on the Equipment, and beyond. Not only do members take advantage of unlimited Studio classes, they also receive 20% off of Equipment drop-in classes, and 15% off of all clothing from the retail shop. SOAR for just $125 per month.

How does it work? When you become a Bird On A Perch member you are billed monthly and your services are automatically added to your account. Memberships renew every six-months unless you request a cancellation {see below}.

Do I still have to sign up for classes? Yup! All classes are first come, first serve. Given our small class sizes if you’re not signed up in advance we can’t guarantee your spot.

What is a Studio Class? Our Studio classes include all Mat, Barre, and Express sessions. Basically anything that doesn’t involve the Equipment is included with your membership.

How do I sign up for a membership? You can buy your membership online through MindBody, or we can set you up next time you’re in the studio.

Why is my credit card required? Since our memberships are billed on a monthly basis we’ll need to have a credit card on file. If you prefer to pay via cash or check you can pay upfront in six-month increments.

Does my Equipment discount apply to packages? Membership Equipment discounts only apply to the drop-in rate {$20/class}. That said you can purchase multiple sessions at a time using your discount, and you’re still getting a steal of a deal.

What if I need to cancel my membership? No problem. While we prefer a six-month commitment we understand that things come up. You can cancel or freeze your membership by submitting a request to at least 30-days prior to your next billing date.

If you have additional questions, don’t hesitate to give us a shout! Whether you prefer to FLAP, FLY, or SOAR the most important thing is that we all keep moving. See you all at the studio <3.

Studio Sounds – October 2017

I feel like dancing.

Sometimes. A lot of times. When I drive down the streets of Marquette in my Black Beauty {aka a 2011 Jetta}, I listen to the songs coming through my stereo and I choreograph. I envision the movement for every beat. Then my head … it starts to whip around. My hands do weird dancer-like things. And my legs start to tap on the gas peddle {don’t worry it’s safe}.

While I have not officially danced since I left Denver these moments give me hope that one day that part of me will emerge again. You know, like, outside of the confines of my Jetta. And, these songs … they’re exactly the kind that will get me there.

  • Mi Mujer, Nicolas Jaar
  • The Heat, Jungle
  • Ritual Union, Little Dragon
  • Feels Like Summer, Weezer
  • Whole Wide World, Cage The Elephant
  • &Run, Sir Sly
  • The Wheel, SOHN
  • Afternoon, Youth Lagoon
  • I Already Forgot Everything You Said, The Dig
  • Down On The Bottom, The New Basement Tapes

To listen to these tunes, and others from our 2017 playlist head over to Spotify. Then, do a little dance. Even if it is a private one.
